Fuck Yeah Fluid Dynamics–or FYFD, as I prefer to call it–is my fluid dynamics outreach blog. FYFD is dedicated to sharing the awesomeness that is fluid dynamics with the world—whether or not you care for calculus. It features a new post about the physics of liquids, gases, plasmas, or granular materials every weekday, and uses photos, videos, and research from scientists, engineers, and artists around the world, accompanied by a short explanation written by me, to get people excited about physics most of them see every day but never learn about formally.
Since its start in 2010, FYFD has grown enormously and been featured in Physics World magazine; on io9, BoingBoing, buzzfeed, and Mashable; and has become a spotlighted blog in Tumblr Science. Here are some of the kind things people have said about FYFD:
“[…] we love the way [FYFD] communicates the marvels of fluid dynamics to people who lack the expertise to understand the complex mathematics behind it. The messy technicalities of flowing matter often get short shrift in popular-science writing, but the glorious videos and images on FYFD suggest that the problem was mostly with the medium, not the message.” – Physics World #
“[FYFD] is quickly becoming my new favorite blog.” – Robert T. Gonzalez, io9 #
“Chalk this up under “Blogs You Ought to be Following”. The Tumblr Fuck Yeah Fluid Dynamics is a great place to find succinct, clear explanations of the forces that make things flow. – Maggie Koerth-Baker, BoingBoing #
“A wonderful blog, and not just for the name.” – Ed Yong, Discover Blogs #
As of August 2013, FYFD has over 170,000 followers on Tumblr, more than 1,100 followers on Twitter, and over 14,000 unique visitors per month. It’s been a crazy ride, but for me, the best part is receiving emails from students telling me that FYFD has inspired them to pursue studies in fluid dynamics. That’s my best metric for success!
